Nebbercracker proceeds by lifting him upwards and unleashing several tantrums on his face. This is however a great mistake; due to his elderly age, he forgot that his body could no longer endure the boy's weight and he had a heart attack at the same time. His bones cracked in the process, causing him to fall unconscious on DJ's body. One day, when Chowder accidentally had his basketball accidentally flew onto Nebbercracker's lawn and prompt DJ to immediately bring it back, Nebbercracker ambushes and storms towards him.

The children, left to their own devices, must conquer the evil that, all but unnoticed, flourishes in their midst. In her final form, Constance is completely demolished, but quickly assembles her broken pieces into an even more menacing form. Her entire body is made of jagged, broken pieces of wood with now-shattered window eyes and a triangular mouth with longer fangs. The chimney is set on the center of her head like a bomb, she keeps her first tree arm as the left arm, her right arm is now made of jagged wood and her right tree arm are now located at the bottom of her body as a tail.

Nebbercracker, when he was younger, was a member of a demolition squad in the US Army. He immediately fell in love with her, and felt bad for her when he saw that kids were picking on her due to her obesity. He married her shortly afterwards, and began building a house for the two of them. In its final form, the house resembles a porcupine made of timber boards, with the shattered yet same windows and a triangular mouth with a longer flange chimney set in the center of its head.

The house continues to chase down DJ and his friends until they were near a construction site, where, for the safety of the children, Nebbercracker throws a stone brick at his house and stands up against Constance, revealing his non-child-hating ways in the process. However, DJ accidentally desecrated Constance's remains by breaking the concrete casing that covered the corpse, revealing the skeleton and inciting the house's fury. The house then picks them up one by one after spotting the kids before they find the place to hide. The house had the slinkies snatch Chowder before doing the same on the pipes (organs) that snatch Jenny and had the wooden stairs attack DJ, who barely escaped back to the hall that turned into a mouth cavity, with his friends nearly devoured.

When he was a young man, he met an obese woman, Constance, at a circus and fell in love with her. Mr. Nebbercracker, appears to be mean and heartless to anyone on his lawn, but only because he is afraid his house will attack the person. He is most likely in his sixties or seventies, as he's pretty slow on his feet. When she was human, Constance was a tall obese woman with short black hair, pale pink cheeks and grey eyes. In her first appearance, she wore a green dress with white flowers and heels.

He knows that the pain and suffering that his wife had in her lifetime has made her into a tricky but savage, bloodthirsty, and murderous monstrosity of her former self. That night, when Constance was locked in the circus car (possibly due to many people eventually disgusted with her looks to the point that the manager locked her up and let the children make fun of her), Nebbercracker helped her escape from the circus and married her. Only a little later, their house began construction, and that's when the trouble began as their happiness proved short-lived. Children always mocked Constance for her body like her days back in circus whenever they met, and often threw eggs, tomatoes, and rocks at her. This ultimately led to the tragedy, that both change Nebbercracker's life and set the whole events of the movie. After taking possession of the house, Constance's physical appearance is comprised of the different parts of the structure.

Nebbercracker returns from the hospital alive and well and it is revealed that Constance is the house. When they first met, Constance was an unwilling participant in a circus freak show who was ridiculed for her obesity. Nebbercracker developed feelings for her as he helped her escape and they later got married. On Halloween, during their house's construction, some children began tormenting Constance. Provoked, she attempted to chase them off as Nebbercracker tries to stop her, only to be knocked out as she stumbled and fell into the unfinished basement with her body accidentally being coated in cement, suffocating her.
Swings out on a crane's hook with the dynamite, dropping it into the house's chimney and vanquishing Constance. Finally freed, her spirit briefly reunites with Nebbercracker before ascending to the afterlife; he thanks the trio for freeing them from their suffering. DJ and Jenny are knocked into the construction site as a result of the house and Chowder's battle on top of the cliff that leads down to the site. They manage to formulate a plan where Chowder will lure the house under a crane so that the two can drop the stick of dynamite down its chimney which leads to the heart. This plan is stalled, however, when the house is dragged down the hill and it breaks apart as a result, leading to the heroes celebrating their apparent victory. This celebration is short-lived, however, as Constance's control over the house is still intact and she manages to reform it from its broken remains, resulting in a more horrific and monstrous form that proceeds to devour the excavator before chasing Chowder.
Separated from the officers, the children explore the sleeping house and end up in its basement. They find all the toys Nebbercracker had stolen and a shrine to his wife, Constance the Giantess, whose skeletal remains are encased in cement. The house soon awakens and attacks them, but they trigger its gag reflex by grabbing its uvula equivalent (a chandelier), forcing it to vomit them outside.

Chowder visits DJ a day before the main plot kicks in, and he, DJ and Jenny decide to get inside the sapient house no matter the circumstances to unveil the mystery on Halloween night. At first the house, which sits on a perfectly ordinary suburban block, seems like nothing more than the dilapidated home of Mr. Nebbercracker, a cranky old man with bad teeth, a gruesome comb-over and Steve Buscemi's voice. It quickly becomes clear -- to a plucky boy-detective type named DJ and his two young sidekicks, and then to everybody else -- that the ramshackle Victorian is possessed by a malevolent, demonic force. The house roars, belches, spits fire and in the end turns out to beKathleen Turner. After DJ, Chowder, and Jenny manage to defeat and destroy the house, Nebbercracker is seen dancing with Constance's ghost before she goes on to the afterlife. Saddened by Constance's departure, Nebbercracker mourns for her and his house while clutching the only remnant of his house, the doorknob.

Jenny then calls Officer Landers and Officer Lister, but does not believe their story. Later the trio seek advice from Skull who is claimed to be an expert on the supernatural. They learn that the house is a Domus Mactabilis (Deadly Home in Latin) a supernatural being created when a human soul merges with structures.
And for the most part they talk and behave like real kids, too, or at least like characters drawn from the rich tradition of plucky, intellectually curious kiddie-lit heroes. DJ is descended from Encyclopedia Brown (perhaps by way of Jimmy Neutron, but never mind), and Jenny bears some temperamental resemblance to Harriet the Spy. I’m sure Chowder will remind you of someone in your fifth-grade class, wherever or whenever that was.
